Will Drinking Diet Fizzy Drinks Make You Gain Weight?

Picture the scene…

You are hungry and craving something sweet.

You know if you reach for a Snickers bar it’s going to add 200 calories to your daily intake.

You walk into the shop and see a can of Coke Zero.

You’ve heard fizzy drinks aren’t the greatest so you opt for the chocolate instead.

Later that day you forget about eating the Snickers and have dinner as usual.

You then realise you are over your calories by 200 for the day.

Not the greatest start to the week.

If this was to happen 3-4 times per week, you’d be over your weekly calorie target by 600-800.

Enough to prevent you losing weight and making progress.

But wait…

Maybe you could opt for the fizzy drink instead…..

Will drinking calorie free fizzy drinks make you gain weight?

No, they won’t.

Weight gain or weight loss is caused by calorie balance.

So a drink that contains zero calories cannot make you gain weight.

It’s physiologically not possible.

Here’s the thing.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth (like me) then it’s possible drinking zero calorie drinks may help you lose weight….

Wait, what?

If you opt to grab a zero calorie drink instead of a 200 calorie chocolate bar, which is better?

From a weight loss perspective the drink wins hands down.

Now, it’s hard to call fizzy drinks “healthy”.

But in small and moderate doses they aren’t the unhealthiest thing you could reach for.

And they certainly won’t make you gain weight.

Zero calorie fizzy drinks can be useful for fat loss…

They help keep you hyrdated
They satisfy your sweet tooth
They add zero calories to your diet
They prevent you from grabbing higher calorie foods

So if you like diet fizzy drinks, feel free to keep them in your diet.

If you aren’t a big fan that’s cool too.

There are no secret health benefits you’re missing out on.

It all comes down to personal taste and preference.

I’ll leave you with a quote from the team over atExamine.com

“There are no studies that indicate any long-term health risks from drinking diet soda. Diet Soda….is not harmful to health, well-being, or body composition” ~ Examine.com
